The technical function of time-stamping is commonly borrowed from the world of finance. Time-stamping standards were set in the 2000s by a working group called IETF ( InternetEngeneeringTask Force), made up of engineers, setting the standards for electronic time-stamping, notably the main standard RFC 3161.

Among date sources, we can use an atomic clock (connected in stratum 1 (UN) without any intermediary. This clock operates at the nanosecond level, with no loss of milliseconds in time. Other time sources include NTP (network time protocol), supplied by Microsoft (ntp.microsoft.com), or GPS (Global Positioning System).
