What is a European unitary patent?

Steps to obtain your protection

1. File a classic European patent application with the EPO.

2. Once the patent has been granted, apply for unitary effect within one month of publication of the mention of grant in the European Patent Bulletin.

3. Take advantage of protection for your invention in the 17 participating countries.

What are the advantages of this type of protection?

The European unitary patent simplifies the patent application process, reduces costs and harmonizes patent law across Europe. In addition, the creation of the Unified Patent Jurisdiction ensures centralized management of patent litigation.

What’s the budget?

The cost of filing a European unitary patent is lower than the cost of filing a conventional European patent. Renewal fees must be paid to a single organization, the EPO. On average, the total cost is estimated at around 5,000 euros for the first ten years.
